Ms. Petra Schwager, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Vienna, Austria
Petra coordinates the Global UNIDO Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Programme that is jointly implemented with the United Nations Environment Programme in more than 60 countries. In her work, she cooperates with governments, private sector, NGOs and academia in advancing sustainable production patterns and policies. She constantly seeks for innovative approaches and concepts to respond to the emerging needs of SMEs in developing countries and economies in transition and provides strategic and technical advice on up-scaling and mainstreaming of resource efficiency at industry level.
In 2014, she initiated UNIDO’s global activities for the promotion of Chemical Leasing, an innovative business model that shifts the focus from increasing the sales volume of chemicals to the function of a chemical. She heads the development and implementation of new approaches to environmentally sound management of chemicals and chemicals waste, works on new global green chemistry initiatives and participates in SAICM negotiations and related projects.
Petra is the co-author of the book “Chemical Leasing goes global”. Chemical Leasing. She studied Economics at the Vienna University of Business Administration and Social Sciences and Environmental Management at the University of London.
In 2014 she received a Special Award of Appreciation from the Minister of Industry in Sri Lanka for her work in promoting Cleaner Production in the country.
