Lise Appels

After her appointment as Research Fellow at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, prof. Appels was appointed assistant professor in the Chemical Engineering Department of KU Leuven (Process and Environmental Technology Lab - PETLab). She holds a MEng in Environmental Engineering (2006, University of Antwerp) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (KU Leuven, 2010). Since 2006, her research has mostly dealt with advanced anaerobic digestion of activated sludge. She further specialises in the biochemical conversion of (lignocellulosic) biomass and organic waste streams for the production of renewable platform chemicals, biofuels and biopolymers. She has (co-)authored 26 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (over 1200 citations, h-index=14) and has presented numerous contributions at international conferences. Furthermore, she performs reviews for international peer-reviewed journals such as Renewable Energy, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Environmental Technology and Chemical Engineering Journal. She recently joined the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews (IF: 5.901) as an Editorial Board Member in the area of Bioenergy.
